This pre-ceremony is carried out a few days before to the nuptials. The god, symbolized by a bamboo pole, is prayed to by the bride’s family.

2. Paalikai Seeds Sowing

This traditional fertility ritual is carried out by the bride’s family the day before the wedding in an attempt to obtain the nine devatas’ blessings for the couple’s well-being and future children. Hariali grass and Vilvam leaves are spread out in earthen pots.

3. Welcoming the Groom

The bride’s family extends a customary and cordial greeting to the groom and his family one day before to the wedding. It is prepared to place flowers, pakku, vetrilai, and fruits in a thali (tray).

4. Vratham

The bride and groom each conduct their own portion of the ceremony. Chanting mantras is a way to ask the gods Chandra, Soma, Agni, and Indra for protection. The bride is shielded from all harm by having kappu, or holy thread, wound around her wrist.

5. Jaana Vaasam

The bridegroom arrives in a parade in a magnificently decorated car for the Jaana Vaasam celebration. He travels from a nearby temple to the mandapam escorted by the bride’s parents.

6. Nichchiyadhartham

The formal engagement ceremony for Tambrahm couples is called Nichchiyadhartham. The bride’s parents perform Ganesh Pooja to start it off. The groom’s family presents the bride with a brand-new sari. She has a kungumam tilak and a chandan on.

7. Mangala Snaanam

In South Indian weddings, a significant custom known as mangala snaanam involves the bride and groom taking a cleansing bath the morning of the wedding. The bride and groom each have their own ritual performed at their respective houses. Their loved ones apply oil and haldi-kumkum tilak to them before to bath time.

8. Ganapathi Puja

A Tamil Brahmin marriage commences with an invocation of Lord Ganpathi, the destroyer of barriers, just like any other auspicious event.

9. Navagraha Puja

In order to bless the couple’s married life, the families of the bride and groom may ask a priest to lead a prayer to placate the nine astral planets.

10. Kasi Yatra

In accordance with this custom, the groom sets off on his ascetic trek to Kashi armed only with his modest possessions (umbrella, fan, slippers, bamboo, etc.). The father of the bride interrupts the groom, persuading him of the value of marriage and promising his daughter’s company.

11. Vaaku Nichaya Muhoortham

In this Tamil Brahmin wedding ceremony, the fathers of the bride and the groom face one another as the priest recite vedic hymns. In this way, the marriage ceremony is made solemn.

12. Exchanging Garlands

The groom and bride exchange their garlands three times during this entertaining ceremony. The bride and groom are joined by friends and family, who either assist them or make the garlands exchange a little difficult. Groom may also be helped by his buddies.

13. Oonjal

The Oonjal is a swing that the couple being married sits on and rock back and forth on. Ladies are singing songs about the pair (Laali) all around them.

14. Vara Puja

The term “vara puja” means “groom worship.” Following the Oonjal, the couple is given a spoonful of milk and a banana as part of the ceremony.

15. Receiving groom in the Mandapam

At the mandapam, the bride’s father greets the groom. The bride’s mother applies kajal to the groom’s eyes, and the bride’s father washes the groom’s feet.

16. Kanya Dhaanam

As the bride’s mother pours water over the coconut, signifying the groom’s handing over of their daughter, the bride sits on her father’s lap and holds it out to him.

17. Kankana Dharanam

During the customary Tamil Brahmin marriage ritual, the bride wraps a thread around the groom’s wrist that has a bit of turmeric wrapped around it.

18. Maangalya Dharanam

The groom ties Mangala Sutra to the bride during this ceremony. A number of customs, including setting the grain sack on the ground, signify richness and abundance both materially and spiritually.

19. Pradhaana Homam

During the Pradhaana Homam, also known as hawan, a couple honors the fire god Aghni devta. They approach the fire ceremoniously, offering it twigs and other sacrificial fuel in addition to ghee. Aghni (Aghni Saakshi) is seen as a testimony to the couple’s holy marriage.

20. Ammi Midithal

In the Tamil wedding custom known as Ammi Midithal, the bride steps on a grindstone with the groom’s assistance. A mantra is recited while stepping on the stone, asking that the bride’s mind be as resilient and powerful as a rock to face the trials of marriage.

21. Arundhati Star

In this custom, the groom shows the bride the Dhruva tara (Pole star) and the Arundhati star of the Saptha Rishi constellation.

22. Akshadai Shower

The rice grains coated in turmeric and saffron are known as akshadai. Elders bestow these as blessings on the newlyweds.

23. Nalungu

During the afternoon of the wedding, the newlyweds engage in lighthearted pastimes such as fanning, breaking papads, wrestling over a betel pack, rolling a coconut, and color paste anointing with their guests.

24. The 3 Homamsu

The girl’s brother gives the newlyweds their first betel leaf to eat during the Thaamboola Charvanam rite. Other gifts are given with this with the intention of granting them long life and offspring. The purpose of the ritual is to bestow wealth and good fortune upon the couple.
